Floortime vs. ABA: what parents should know

Both are common therapies for children with autism, and both can help. They start from different ideas about how children learn. Here's a fair, side-by-side look to help you decide what fits your child and family.

The short version

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) focuses on teaching specific skills and behaviors, usually through structured, adult-led teaching and reinforcement. DIR Floortime focuses on the foundations underneath skills, such as engagement, communication, emotional regulation and thinking, through child-led play and relationships.

Why some families choose Floortime

  • They want therapy their child enjoys and looks forward to.
  • Their main concern is connection: their child seems hard to reach or doesn't seek out others.
  • They want to understand why their child behaves a certain way, not only change the behavior.
  • They want to be part of the therapy and use the strategies themselves.

Why some families choose ABA

  • They want a strong focus on specific skills, like daily-living routines.
  • Their child benefits from a lot of structure and repetition.
  • There are safety-related behaviors that need a targeted plan.

Can my child do both?

Yes. Many families combine approaches, and many ABA programs today include more play-based and naturalistic methods. If your child is in ABA and you're adding Floortime, we're glad to coordinate with your child's team so everyone is working toward goals that fit together.

How to decide

There's no single right answer for every child. Think about what matters most to you right now, how your child learns best, and what your insurance covers. We're happy to talk it through, with no pressure.
